Tony's Odyssey

Welcome to my world

Welcome to my world! I'm Tony, a remote operations directional driller at Chevron Canada. Originally from Scotland, I've traveled all over the globe, including an unforgettable six-year stint in Cambodia from 2014 to 2020. Now settled back in Canada with my wife and two sons, I'm excited to share my adventures, insights from online courses in AI development, digital marketing, and cybersecurity, as well as the fun I have creating YouTube videos with my kids. Follow along as I navigate this fast-paced world and explore life’s many facets.

    My Journey in the Oilfield

When I first joined SLB as an MWD specialist in 2005, I was completely new to the field and eager to learn. The hands-on experience and intense training I received were invaluable, teaching me critical skills that propelled my career forward. Each day presented new challenges that pushed me to grow and adapt quickly. Reflecting back, those initial experiences laid a strong foundation for my success in the oil and gas industry.

Becoming an E-Mag instructor briefly in 2008 was a pivotal moment in my career, pushing me to refine my technical expertise and communication skills. It taught me the importance of precision and clarity, both in handling complex tools and in imparting knowledge to others. This role not only made me a better hand but also ignited a passion for continuous improvement and mentorship.

Pivoting into directional drilling in 2009 was a monumental shift, requiring me to master an entirely new set of skills. The learning curve was steep (high doglegs :P), but the opportunity to delve into this advanced aspect of the oilfield was both challenging and exhilarating. I am deeply appreciative of the chance to grow in this role, as it pushed me to refine my expertise and adaptability. It’s these very skills that have propelled me to the heights I’ve reached today, shaping my career and instilling a sense of pride and accomplishment.

Moving into consultancy for directional drilling in 2014 allowed me the time to perfect my skills, sharpening each one to precision. This experience has equipped me with a quiver full of expertise to offer even greater value as I continued in the oilfield.

Enthusiastically accepting into the Chevron Remote Center position as a directional driller has been an incredible experience. I gained a deeper understanding of every aspect of the operation and significantly grew my skill set. The connections and lifelong friendships I made along the way have been invaluable. This journey has only ignited a stronger desire to continue advancing in my field.
